EDM has established itself as a versatile and precise manufacturing process in toolmaking. In mold making, it plays a central role in the production of injection molds, die casting molds and blow molds for the plastics and metal industries. Punching and forming technology benefits from eroded punching knives, punching dies and deep-drawing tools that offer high accuracy and durability. In prototype construction, it enables the rapid realization of individual parts or small series. It is also used in the repair and modification of existing tools and in microsystems technology for the production of tiny components. The use of EDM is particularly advantageous when maximum precision is required, complex shapes have to be realized or very hard materials have to be processed where conventional processes reach their limits. To ensure a fast response time in the die-sinking EDM of contour parts, all electrodes at CFK are milled automatically on modern 5-axis machines. Possible materials here are copper and graphite. Wire erosion also plays a major role in toolmaking, for example when it comes to fits with sharp edges and surfaces of up to Ra0.2. Drill erosion is also used in toolmaking when deep holes need to be drilled for cooling. Drilling depths of 800 mm and a diameter of 0.35 to 7.5 mm are possible in drill erosion, where machining reaches its limits.
